The SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP ) combines intelligent enterprise applications with data management, analytics, integration, and extension capabilities in a platform for cloud and hybrid environments. The BTP provides hundreds of pre-built integrations for SAP and third-party applications.

SAP launched its cloud strategy back in October 2012. At SAP TechEd in Barcelona, it presented its new Platform-as-a-Service offering under the name SAP NetWeaver Cloud.
Even back then, this was a platform that relied on open standards and was intended to give other companies the opportunity to develop on-demand applications in a cloud environment. A range of services from the areas of databases, integration and document management could be used for this purpose.
In February 2017, this platform was expanded to include additional functionality and services. In addition, SAP rebranded it to SAP Cloud Platform (SCP). Many of the functionalities that can now be found in the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) originated in the SAP Cloud Platform.
The SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) was first presented at SAP TechEd 2019 in Barcelona. The SAP BTP provides a uniform substructure "stack" and, like its predecessors, is based on open standards such as Cloud Foundry. The SAP BTP thus paves the way for a one-platform solution. In February 2021, the SAP Cloud Platform brand was deleted and all functionalities and services migrated to SAP Business Technology.
Depending on your requirements, SAP BTP runs on different hyperscalers, such as “Amazon Web Services (AWS)”, “Google Cloud Platform (GCP)”, “Microsoft Azure” or on SAP’s own data centers. This is completely abstracted by SAP BTP. This gives applications and services maximum flexibility in terms of their infrastructure.
The SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) stands out above all because of its very good integration with on-premise, cloud, SAP and third-party applications. In the SAP BTP, this data from various sources is brought together in an integrated platform. This enables companies to evaluate the data they have collected more quickly and securely and use it for decision-making. In addition, companies can make their processes more efficient with the SAP BTP by saving hardware and operating costs as well as implementation time.
Extensibility is also an important component. SAP BTP offers a broad basis for modern web applications, such as SAPUI5, SAP Fiori, React or Node.js. In addition, the platform provides services related to artificial intelligence, big data, data analysis and process automation, which can be used without the need for complex infrastructure procurement. The offering is rounded off by SAP Build, which follows a low-code or no-code approach.
SAP BTP can be used to integrate both SAP's own solutions (S/4HANA, SAP Ariba, SAP Concur, etc.) and non-SAP solutions. The most important functionalities for this can be found in the SAP Integration Suite, which either comes with ready-made integrations or enables the development of your own integrations.
With the NetWeaver Cloud, SAP was an early adopter of open standards. With Cloud Foundry, SAP BTP also relies on such open standards. This enables companies to develop cloud-native or multi-cloud applications on the SAP Business Technology Platform. SAP promotes these types of extensions as side-by-side extensions and follows the clean core approach.
